Book Love Review: The House Of Furies by Madeleine Roux

What a winner! I listened to The House of Furies on audiobook during my recent travels.  It was delightfully read and engaging. The narrator used a variety of voices and accents for the characters.

This book follows the runaway Luisa Dutton as she takes employment as a maid at the Coldthistle boardinghouse. She discovers that the house draws people who have done evil deeds to it. The boarders check in to make use of the healing waters of the spring. The owner and staff make sure that the guests won’t be leaving the house alive.

House of Furies

What I Loved About This Book

Louisa is an engaging character. I loved her spunky attitude and her curiosity that always lands her in situations over her head.

Some Chapters are Chapters from the book Louisa is reading. It is written by the owner of the boarding house and documents his travels and insight into creatures and beings that are not human and the abilities they possess. This was a tidy way to learn about the other characters in the book. Expect hellhounds, changelings, and phantom shadow creatures.

The pacing of the book is good. It does start a bit slow but builds up into a powerful story with unexpected twists and turns. I honestly did not know what was going to happen next and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Louisa is both disturbed, protected, and draw to the house and the strange characters. I really enjoyed her struggle with the evil and the evil deeds of those who come to Coldthistle house.

It is possible that I will never look at birds without remembering this book and the unique and disturbing role they play. I love books that stick a thought or image in my head for years to come.

The romantic relationship was not my favorite aspect of the story but it did play it’s part well and unlike some romantic subplots it was a driving force for Louisa’s actions at times.

You Should Read This Book If

You enjoy a story that plays out the Good Vs Evil idea with a different spin.

You are fascinated with lore, paranormal, ghost stories or urban legends.

You once loved (or still love) all things with an R.L. Stine vibe

You enjoy a historical setting that is rooted in folklore and legend.

On another note, dI highly recommend the audiobook because the narrator does multiple voices and accents. You will thank me later!

BOOKLOVEREVIEW

Overall, I adored the slightly creepy but not quite scary vibe. It does have some gorey scenes but they are written in a way that you get the idea with having overdone gross details.

I have already checked out all the other books by this author and I can’t wait to read the sequel. If you want to talk book with me find me on Social Media and don’t forget to follow me on Youtube.

June Owlcrate Unboxing: Make it Out Alive

Zombies? Check.

Survival Stickers? Check.

I am ready for this month’s Owlcrate unboxing… are you? This months theme is Make It Out Alive and it contains 2 complete books. Which makes it a winning box in my opinion.  Read on to find out what was in the box and my thoughts and then click the link below to check out the unboxing video. My kids assisted with the unboxing and they have a special request for you at the end of it.

Unboxing video

The complete contents of the box… except the magnet. I stuck it on my metal lamp and forgot to photograph it until later.

My favorite non book item was bath bomb  from the Fizzy Fairy Apothecary. ( I adore that name!)  This bath bomb was created exclusively for Owlcrate.  It was amazing and  turned my bath water a fizzy DARK green. So dark  that it would have been easy to let the silver tree charm inside it go unnoticed if I had not an inkling that there was something inside it.

The box also included a bookmark, a magnet, the author letter, and the signed bookplate. Isn’t this magnet adorable? I love the quote.

My daughters favorite item is the zombie sleep mask. It has already disappeared into her room along with the multi colored pen that came in last months box.

Joshua liked this month’s button and the sleep mask as well.

The box also included survival themed stickers. Now that I have started reading the book the theme and related items are clicking into place. Although, I have not deciphered the meaning of the iron on patch that was included.

On to the books. The featured book is The Sandcastle Empire. I am already on page 120 and it is keeping me interested, but as of right now I don’t think it will go on my list of favorite books for the year.

The second book is a paperback called New World Rising and I am excited to start reading.

Next month’s theme is  wanderlust. The box will include a licensed product from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I get the feeling that I am going to have to fight to keep that item from my kids.

Which brings me to the challenge I mentioned at the beginning of the post.

I made a deal with my kids and you get to help them out.  I told them that when we get 10 views of our video and 10 new subscribers to my YouTube channel I will order them there very own Owlcrate Jr and let them make there own unboxing video. They have been begging me for months to order them a box so let’s make it happen!

May Owlcrate Unboxing: Comic Explosion Plus Announcements!

It is Owlcrate Unboxing time! Actually, it is way past that. I filmed the video a last week but I am just now getting it posted. This box was worth the wait! Comic Explosion was the theme and OwlCrate had already let us know that we would be getting a Funko Pop figurine. I was beyond excited about that but afraid I would get one I did not like.

Hop over and watch the Video!

Oh my Gosh… I got Wonder Woman! I could not be happier. I adore her outfit and sword. I keep her on my desk with the Wonder Woman Candle that was ALSO in this box! It is tropical scented and I think it has a nice  hint pomegranate. It is adorable sized ( which is small but calling it adorable is a great marketing tool – and accurate. It is adorable. I don’t even care that is not very big.

Here is a quick list of what was in this months box:

  • Funko pop figurine
  • Adorable sized candle
  • Comic inspired button with coordinating zipper pull/keychain
  • Organic Coffee Candy
  • Art Card
  • Comic layout spoiler card
  • Next months theme card
  • Author Letter & Signed Book Plate
  • Sample Chapter of AFAR  graphic novel
  • Eliza and her Monsters Novel

I enjoyed all the items. I ate the coffee candy before taking a good photo. I thought about photographing the empty wrapper but I decided to discard the evidence of my candy binge. I do love coffee flavored candy.  I don’t like most “hard” candy but coffee candy is the exception.

The graphic novel sample chapter is impressive. I started reading it but then I spilled coffee on it. Gotta wait for the pages to dry before I finish it. Just call me a coffee klutz.

I loved the author letter. The letter has become one my most anticipated things in the box. Don’t forget to watch the video – I read part of the letter.

File May 29, 1 27 02 PM

I have not had time to read the book but I am dragging it along with me on vacation. I love the exclusive cover.

File May 29, 1 29 07 PM

Please excuse the terrible background in the prior photo. Everything I have done this month has had to be done in a rush and I overlooked some details. I also had a lot of issues filming the video. I kept mispronouncing BASIC words and rambling. I had to edit out a lot of the video.

File May 29, 1 27 47 PM

Next month sounds like a dystopian theme! I am excited to see if I am right about it. They are also including an exclusive item from the FIZZY FAIRY APOTHECARY.

I think there is still time to sigh up for the June box! Get your box

I also share a few announcements on my video. I have an author newsletter than you can subscribe to.  It will be monthly or bimonthly and feature exclusive content, occasional freebies, giveaways, and news about what is happening with me and my books.
